Understanding Kaushal Bodh

Skill Education, now a graded, mandatory part of middle school.

Kaushal Bodh, literally "skill wisdom," is NCERT's new series of project-based Skill Education activity books for Classes 6, 7 and 8. From the 2025–26 session, CBSE has made it mandatory in every affiliated school. This page explains what it is, how it works, and what it means for your school, in plain language.

A new, graded subject for the middle stage

For years, skill education in Indian schools was treated as an optional add-on. From 2025–26, CBSE has made Kaushal Bodh a mandatory, assessed subject for every affiliated school. Here's what defines it:

Who it's for & who made it
Developed by NCERT for students in Classes 6, 7 and 8, and mandated by CBSE for all affiliated schools, both private and government, from the 2025–26 academic session.
The policy behind it
It puts into practice the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, both of which call for hands-on vocational exposure early, and less dependence on rote learning.
How the year is structured
  • About 110 hours a year, roughly five periods a week.
  • Three projects each year, one from each of the three work domains.
  • Each project runs for around 30 hours of hands-on work.
  • Nine completed projects by the end of Class 8.
How it's different
There are no high-pressure written exams. Learning is assessed mostly on what students actually build and how they present it, an 80% practical and 20% theory model, and the year ends with a Kaushal Mela, a skill fair where students showcase their work.

Kaushal Bodh uses continuous, process-oriented assessment. Marks reward doing and presenting, not memorising, and they count towards internal assessment.

Which classes does it cover?
Classes 6, 7 and 8: the middle stage. There is one Kaushal Bodh activity book for each of the three classes, with projects that deepen year on year.
Does my child need a separate tutor for it?
No. It is not an extra academic subject with high-stakes exams. It is done in school, in project form, and assessed mostly on the work itself, so no separate tuition is needed.
How is it assessed?
Through continuous, project-based assessment: roughly 80% practical and 20% theory. Marks come from activity-book completion, a presentation or viva, teacher observation, a portfolio and a short written check, and they feed into internal assessment.
How much time does it take?
About 110 hours across the academic year, roughly five periods a week. Most schools fold this into existing work-experience, art and health-education slots rather than adding brand-new periods.
What are the three work domains?
Work with Life Forms (plants, animals, environment), Work with Materials & Machines (making, building, basic electronics and coding), and Work in Human Services (health, first aid, community). Students take one project from each domain every year.
Do schools have to use the exact projects in the book?
No. Each book gives six illustrative projects (two per domain), but schools are encouraged to choose from these or design their own around local resources, using the project templates provided in the book's annexures.
Where can schools get the books?
The Kaushal Bodh activity books are published by NCERT and are available on the CBSE Academic and NCERT websites in both physical and digital formats, so schools can choose based on their resources.
